retirement
Well, yesterday was all the celebratory stuff for my coworker's retirement.
We had a presentation in the afternoon down in the conference center. Senior management (senior senior management - really) was there, and he received recognition for 44+ years of dedication to this company. Quite an achievement, really.
Then we went to dinner at The Capital Grille. Mmmm. How I ended up sitting with the former president of Property and the COO of Specialty Risks, I don't know. However, through dinner and wine (and multiple toasts to the guest of honor), and a dessert of creme brulee (mmmm) we maintained a good and sparkling conversation. There were many stories about my coworker's professionalism and dedication to the industry. There were statements of amazement at 44 years. Nobody brought up anything about his personality.
So I did. I shared the story of what he did for my mother when my father had a stroke while in NYC for work. People stopped joking for a moment. I think it was then that they realized that, not only is a good adjuster, or a good negotiator, but even more important, he is a good man.
Today, our department (the small number of us) are going to lunch. Then he takes the train back to Penn Station. He will, officially, then, be a retiree. He deserves his time. So, ABC1, here's hoping for your next 30 years. May they be as relaxing and enriching as you wish them to be.
