Well, last night was our "Marine Salvage Seminar." We went out on the Salvage Vessel Elizabeth M from the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, and cruised up to Manchester (aka Manchester-by-the-Sea) on three foot seas, then back to Pickering Wharf in Salem, and finally back to the BYC.
Most of the guys were drinking. Heavily. I had NO ALCOHOL last night.
So, on the boat, we had our class. Our host and instructor was nearly constantly smoking, so I had to take some prednisone when we reached land. Last thing I need now is to be covered with hives, itchy, and swollen throat and horribly painful joints.
The class consisted of several items:
1. Yachting Etiquette at Sea
2. Navigation and Seamanship
3. Heavy Lift & Recovery of Ice Laden Cargoes
4. Handling of Rum Squalls
5. Fine Club Dining
And what we learned?
1. How to wave to other folks out on the water
2. How to steer around the lobster pots
3. That in order to easily remove coolers from the vessel, you should drink what's in them first.
4. Add coke. Or just pour another rum.
5. Have fun. Nobody cares.
No, no credit for this one. It was fun, but I still feel sick to my stomach from the cigarettes.
