1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (November 22, 1963)

2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (May 18, 1980)
just facing exams at middle school - I was sitting in my resource class when we got the news
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (January 28, 1986)
watching it launch from the front window of my high school. We knew something was wrong, and ran in to look at the TV in our Spanish classroom when that happened. Our Spanish teacher was one of the finalists to go on that one...
4. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (October 17, 1989)
taking care of my grandmother while she recovered from her car accident (the one that killed my grandfather
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (November 7, 1989)
Working as a veterinary technician - getting ready to return to college
6. When the Gulf War began (January 16, 1991)
sitting in the student lounge at the church across the street from campus, listening to the first strikes on the radio, and crying. This was the first time I knew someone who was in a war...
7. When the first World Trade Center bombing happened (February 26, 1993)
In Ghana - though I heard later that my cousin was hospitalized as a result of exhaustion (his ladder was among first response to the WTC)
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (June 17, 1994)
In Tulsa - watching it with my boss at the grocery store.
9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (April 19, 1995)
still in Tulsa - we went down to assist with the Red Cross relief the next day. I was off from work that day, and my mother called me to check to see if I was ok. I don't think she realized how far away OKC is from Tulsa.
10. When Princess Di was killed (August 31, 1997)
got home from a night out with friends - and stayed glued to the TV the rest of the night. I was in Wausau, WI at the time.
11. When Bush was first announced President (November 7, 2000)
I was in Wausau, WI - and disgusted with the whole thing.
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (February 28, 2001)
Working at property insurance, and wondering who was going to get to go on this CAT(astrophe) team.
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (September 11, 2001)
I had arrived in Boston the night before from management training at Liberty. The classes were supposed to start at 1PM. My coworker called me and told me to turn on the news. I immediately called my mother to find out if my cousin was on duty again - she didn't know. And she couldn't get through to anyone in our family in NY. I had one cousin that was in the NYFD, and WTC was part of his territory - and three other cousins who worked in the towers. Was everyone ok? It took all day to get a response from anyone. Everyone was, miraculously, away from there. My cousin in the NYFD had been relieved of duty 20 minutes before the first plane hit, and was on the LIE on his way home (he doesn't listen to the radio), one was home recovering from gall-bladder surgery, one was late, and the other was on vacation that day.
The class was postponed to start the next day, and my coworker and I wandered the streets of a deserted Boston. Downtown Crossing was eerie.
14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (February 1, 2003)
On the phone with my sister, wishing her a happy birthday. I was in the middle of cleaning for Imbolc.
